Regional slang is a very real phenomenon, from hella chill Californians on America's West Coast to wicked Massholes on the Eastern shore. The nation does share one common language: curse words. But where are each of these supposedly unspeakable words most popular? A map from Jack Grieve, a Forensic Linguistics professor at Aston University in the UK answers this burning question.

Grieve analyzed nearly a billion tweets to build this dataset. The maps, one for each word, are color coded by the z-score of the region. "A high z-score means that that county is in the midst of a region where that word is relatively common, a negative z-score means that that county is in the midst of counties where that word is less common," Grieve explains.

These maps lead us to surprising insights, such as the apparent popularity of the word "cunt" in Maine, or "shit" across the South.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the gentle "darn" is most popular in the friendly Midwest.

While the slightly stronger "damn" is more popular in the South.
