Ewan McGregor doesn't like Kylo Ren's crossguard lightsaber in new Star Wars installment
Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan is the latest to weigh in on Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. The controversial cross guard lightsaber was first seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens preview trailer, and has been a hot topic issue among fanboys ever since.
In an interview with MTV, McGregor sounding very much like your Jedi dad scoffs that "you don’t need hilts." He goes on further to add, “If you know how to handle a lightsaber, you don’t need a silly hilt. We managed very well, the Jedi order managed very well without hilts for hundreds of millions of years.”
While it’s certainly true that generations of Jedi have done perfectly well without one, it doesn’t change the fact that there are members of the order who might want one. And from a merchandising point of view, it makes perfect sense that Disney will want to capitalize on selling lightsabers, and they can’t do that if without the hilt Kylo Ren’s looks just like Darth Vader’s. Every padawan knows that.
Star Wars: Episode VII will be in theaters December 18, 2015.
