According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the last 5 months of 2015 have been the hottest on record, since 1880.

May has been recorded as the hottest month on record, and although data varies slightly between data sets, NASA, NOAA and the Japan Meteorological Agency, all agree that fourteen of the hottest years ever have been in the 21st century and that the past five months have been the hottest in recorded history.

Different parts of the world felt the heatwave differently. Whereas those in the American Midwest had a cooler season, other places such as Alaska and Saudi Arabia hit record highs.

The Pacific Ocean El Nino season is expected to continue into the 2015-2016 winter, and could exacerbate the high temperatures. Conversely, it could provide California with much needed rain.
