Rats dream about reaching their goals, goals generally involve eating treats in a maze
In a study where rats were shown a treat at the end of a path that they couldn't access and were then given a cozy opportunity to take a nap, the rats often dreamt about running down the path to eat the treat. The neurons that lit up when the rats understood the route were the same neurons that lit up during nap time.
The researchers admit that they weren't able to confirm that the rats were indeed sleeping and not just taking a break from a long day at the lab by peacefully resting their eyes. But whether rats unconsciously dream about achieving their goals, or consciously think about it, its absolutely adorable either way.
