The British Geological Survey, a government-sponsored environmental science organization, recently created a scale model of the United Kingdom in the popular video game Minecraft. Now, they've taken that work a step further, designing detailed 3D models of three specific geographic locations, West Thurrock, York, and Ingleborough, with beautiful realism.

The geologists created these models using Minecraft's digital glass bricks, colored to represent the topography of the regions. Minecraft players can also see underground, where colored bricks represent different types of rock and soil (you can see a key here).

The models can be installed and explored in any Minecraft game. Hopefully, by putting dry geological information in this interactive format the Survey can help young people see science in a new way.
