A group of Russian sailors have captured a giant squid in broad daylight.

For many years, giant squids were believed to be a myth. Only dead specimens were found washed up on coastlines, and very few were ever seen alive, let alone captured on film.

In early 2013, Japanese researchers captured underwater footage of a live giant squid. The first ever footage was recorded in 2006.

Giant squids have eyes the size of frisbees. They are filled with water that leaks out when the animal dies, deflating them like a plastic bag.

The giant squid could have been a precursor to the sea serpent myth. Other myths speculated that what were actually squids were thought to be mermen, or sea monks.

Giant squid might engage in cannibalism.
