The world’s smallest and most powerful micro motor has been unveiled. Tomoaki Mashimo, a researcher at the Toyohashi University of Technology has developed the prototype for a micro ultrasonic motor that’s armature is only one cubic millimeter in volume and has more than 10 μNm of torque.

Tiny micro motors are needed for a wide range of applications. They are used in mobile and wearable devices as well as in minimally invasive medical devices. Mashimo’s new motor will be very useful in rotating tiny objects like small sensors and mechanical parts. He is still working on improving the motor’s energy efficiency and lifetime.
