AOL dial-up is still very much a thing
In the Unites States, 2.1 million people still use AOL dial-up to connect to the internet, according to AOL’s quarterly earnings report. The average broadband speed in the US is 11.4 Megabits per second, which is 200 times faster than dial-up, which is 56 Kilobits per second. To top that, the average AOL dial-up user is paying $20 a month to use it.
Dial-up in 1995 meant simple pictures loading slowly from the top down. But now it means even slower loading times, as most websites have much more complex elements and interactive add-ons than sites did in the 90s. To download this popular GIF of a dancing old man, it takes a dial-up user four whole minutes.
