OTOY, a cloud graphics startup, believes that virtual reality will soon be navigable.

Currently, the viewer is static in most virtual reality experiences. You can tilt your head and look around, but all you're really allowed is a 360 view. But with the introduction of light-field technology, OTOY believes users will be able to move around the space and experience a range of perspectives.

For example, let's say you're watching a basketball game broadcast in 3D and the referrie blocks your view. With light-field technology, you could potentially move over to look around the ref and watch the game uninterupted. Sweet.
