Calorie-counting artificial intelligence technology will look at your food pics on Instagram and tell you how many calories you're about to eat.

The Google project, called Im2Calories, identifies the food in the picture, uses "sophisticated deep-learning algorithms" to determine the size and shape of the portions, and calculates how many calories the food contains.

The developers think that this service is not only in high demand by Instagram users, but it will also be useful for public health researchers who could use the data to learn more about our eating habits.
