The Federal Aviation Administration completed its first drone delivery mission successfully in Wise County, Virginia last week.

Flirtey, an Australian drone-delivery startup, pioneered the voyage which carried medical supplies from an airfield to a clinic.

The trip was 35 miles, which most drones cannot complete without some kind of assistance. Flirtey and the FAA got help from NASA, which flew the supplies closer to the destination.

Although this is a landmark moment, it could be a while before drone deliveries become commonplace. Places such as France, Switzerland, and Australia are already experimenting with the possibilities, including delivering mail by drone. Amazon has already proposed a drone delivery service as well.

Recently a drone was used to deliver abortion-inducing medication to women in Poland, where such pills are illegal.
