The First Church of Cannabis just got its tax-exempt status
Despite doobious skeptics, the First Church of Cannabis is officially a real thing, according to the IRS and Indiana's Secretary of State.
The church was accepted under Indiana's new Religious Freedom Restoration Act. "Based on love and understanding with compassion for all," the church uses "Cannabis, the 'healing plant,' as [their] sacrament."
The church will have its tax-exempt status from the IRS effective June 1st, but to be blunt, many non-profits lose their exemption status after the first year, according to the Non-profit Risk Management Center. Members will have to make a joint effort to keep the church thriving.
