The war on drugs accounts for 89% of US government wiretaps
A newly released government report reveals that the United States uses more wiretaps for drug cases than for any other crime.
The US Court System released its annual report of every wiretap, indicating that out of 3,554 wire taps in 2014, 89 percent of those were for narcotics cases. Twenty-five years ago that number was 62 percent of total cases.
Obama has recently begun targeting the mass incarceration problem in the United States by reducing sentencing for petty drug criminals, putting the breaks on the war on drugs. It's yet to be seen if these new policies will reduce the percentage of wiretaps used for these cases.
