Ex-DEA agent Carl Mark Force IV charged with corruption relating to Silk Road case
Former DEA agent Carl Mark Force IV, as well as former Secret Service agent Shaun Bridges are expected to be arrested on Monday for stealing Silk Road bitcoins and other bit-crime during their investigation.
Silk Road, a darknet drug market, was shut down by law enforcement in 2013, and the administrator, Ross Ulbricht, under the pseudonym “Dread Pirate Roberts” (DPR), was convicted of drug charges in 2015. During the investigation, Mr. Force created a pseudonym called “French Maid”, and offered to sell information to DPR about the government investigation, in exchange for $100k of Bitcoin. He also stole bitcoins he was supposed to turn over to the government.
Additionally, Mr. Force operated illegally as the Chief Compliance Officer for a third-party exchange, CoinMKT, and used his powers to run illegal background checks, steal customer funds, and faked documents. Mr. Bridges acted to create a front company, Quantum International Investments, LLC, to launder the stolen Bitcoin. Both men have resigned from their positions at the DEA and Secret Service.
