Pundits and internet soothsayers have been predicting for years that many people would only access the web by smartphone, but it's often been assumed that poorer countries would lead the way. A new study has partially debunked that belief and finds that 1 in 5 adult Americans only go online through their phones.

Other surprising data includes the fact that 10% of Americans over 18 have no broadband service beyond their data package and 15% have no other way of getting online at all.

Quartz explains that this trend could have a significant social impact because how a person accesses the internet determines what they are capable of doing online.
