According to the latest projection from a Streeteasy, “the typical New York household is forecast to spend 65.4 percent of its total annual income to afford median rent in 2016, up from 58.7 percent in 2015.” Paying 30% or less of your income towards rent would qualify as having “affordable housing.” Factoring in heat, hot water and electricity costs, not to mention transportation, health and child care, it is clear that there is a housing crisis in New York City.
