Godzilla has been granted "citizenship" in Japan
After 61 years in Japan, Godzilla has finally gotten his citizenship. Tokyo's Shinjuku ward has granted the beast a certificate which reads:
Address: Shinjuku-ku, Kabuki-cho, 1-19-1
Date of birth: April 9, 1954
Reason for special residency: Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe
Previous visits to Shinjuku Ward: 3 times; Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
BBC notes that this is, obviously, a PR move by the city: "Ever since Godzilla first appeared in Ishiro Honda's 1954 film and then a series of tokukatsu (live action) films in Japan, the character has remained important in Japanese pop culture and history." Godzilla -- the character, the concept -- will also serve as a tourism ambassador.
