Bolivia's president Evo Marales gave bewildered Pope Frances a crucifix with Jesus nailed to a sickle and hammer. The Pope looked at it with a confused facial expression for several seconds before handing it to the Bolivian presidential aide.

Despite the gift being a huge communist symbol with a tiny crucified Jesus on it, the Bolivian government has said the gesture was not politically motivated. Marianela Paco, communications minister, said President Morales thought that the "pope of the poor" would appreciate the gift.
